Desisa wins as Ethiopia sweeps Dubai Marathon -The Hindu : Sport / Athletics :
Lelisa Desisa was not far away from the world record in his debut race as Ethiopia swept the men’s and women’s podium at the Dubai Marathon on Friday.
Desisa, 23, clocked 2 hours 4 minutes 45 seconds over the 42.195-kilometres distance, just 1:07 minutes off the world record 2:03:38 from Kenyan Patrick Makau.

Desisa got a big winners’ cheque of of 200,000 dollars, and so did Tirfi Tsegaye, who won the women’s race in 2:23:23 from fellow-Ethiopians Ehitu Kiros (2:23:39) and Amane Gobena (2:23:50).

Ethiopia holds champion to make its point - CNN.com
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- Ethiopia marked return to Africa Cup of Nations with 1-1 draw against Zambia
- Ethiopia missed first half penalty and had goalkeeper sent off
- Collins Mbesuma gave Zambia the lead only for Adane Girma to equalize
- Nigeria held to 1-1- draw by Burkina Faso in Group C's other game
(CNN) -- Ethiopia had waited 31 years for this moment -- and its football players didn't disappoint as it produced an impressive performance to take a point from defending champion Zambia.
Forced to play with 10-men for much of the contest following the dismissal of goalkeeper Jemal Tassew, Ethiopia overcame a first-half penalty miss and a Collins Mbesuma goal to claim a 1-1 draw.
Adane Girma's 65th minute strike sparked wild celebrations amongst the Walya Antelopes' fans and coach Sewnet Bishaw was left delighted with his team's performance.
"I'm happy as we missed a penalty and drew. This is our first experience after 31 years so, as you see, it was fantastic for our football," he told reporters.

"The players have shown their characters, and shown the rest of the world they can play football.
"The goalkeeper also has to defend, he went to defend the ball, and shouldn't have been red carded."
Ethiopia should have been ahead even by the time Tassew had been sent off for a reckless challenge on Chisamba Lungu 10 minutes before the break.
Playing against a Zambia side consisting of 10 of the 11 which had won the competition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea last year, Ethiopia started in impressive fashion and came agonizingly close to scoring.
Ahmed Said raced through on goal and lifted the ball over the on rushing Kennedy Mweene but the ball somehow bounced over the crossbar.
Buoyed by a vociferous following, Ethiopia continued to threaten and had the perfect opportunity to take the lead on 23 minutes when Said was fouled inside the penalty area by Lungu.
But the striker appeared to lose his nerve at the crucial moment as his effort was easily dealt with by Mweene.
That miss looked to have taken the momentum out of Ethiopia's sails and it was left firmly on the back foot 12 minuets later as Tassew was shown a straight red card after taking out Lungu in dangerous fashion.
Slowly but surely, Zambia began to take the upper hand and it was no surprise when Mbesuma took Isaac Chansa's headed pass in his stride before firing home from close range.

But Ethiopia was not to be denied, and despite enduring a barrage of pressure, it fought back to equalize with 25 minutes remaining.
Substitute Addis Hintsa picked out Said and it was his pass which allowed captain Girma to fire home at the near post past Mweene to seal a point.
Mbesuma came close to stealing a winner for Zambia but coach Herve Renard admitted his team were fortunate not to lose following a disappointing display.
He told reporters: "First of all I would like to congratulate Ethiopia for a very good performance.
"I'm not surprised -- I said be careful of this team, they are able to play very good football.
"Today, we have to thank our goalkeeper -- without Kennedy Mweene it could have been a very, very bad result.
"Our fans expected more than we did today, and they are right. Today, it was the fault of the coach. I did not prepare the team well to start the competition -- we'll see how things go after the third game.
Nigeria held
In Group C's other game, Nigeria conceded a 94th minute equalizer as Burkina Faso grabbed a 1-1 draw.
Emmanuel Emenike's 22nd minute strike had put the Super Eagles ahead and it looked on course for victory until defender Efe Ambrose was shown a second yellow card with 16 minutes remaining.
And with just seconds remaining, Alain Traore rounded off a a wonderful counter-attack to steal a point and leave Nigeria stunned.
"All four teams have one point so everything is open," Burkina Faso coach Paul Put told reporters.
"The performance today showed who Burkina are -- we have quality in the team.
"We were missing some key players so I am very proud of what we did. I was confident of getting a point against Nigeria.
"This was a very good result for us and I am looking forward to the second game against Ethiopia."
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, who won the competition as a player in 1994, insists the disappointing of failing to close out the game will not affect his players.
He told reporters: "I am not going to let anything bring us down. I'm very proud of the boys, who did everything I wanted of them.
"This game is gone and the next game against Zambia is very, very important. I'll pick up the players and motivate them."

Keita goal helps Mali grab first win of Africa Cup of Nations - CNN.com
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- Seydou Keita grabs the only goal of the game as Mali beat Niger at Africa Cup of Nations
- Former Barcelona star's late strike settles the first win of the tournament after three draws
- DR Congo come back from 2-0 down to deny Ghana victory in the first game of Group B
(CNN) -- Former Barcelona star Seydou Keita grabbed the only goal of the game as Mali beat Niger to become the first winners at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Captain Keita's 84th minute goal sealed victory for Mali in their opening game and broke a run of three draws at the tournament to determine the continent's best team.
With the match seemingly heading for a stalemate, just like the opening two matches of the competition on Saturday, Keita capitalized on a mistake by Niger goalkeeper Daouda Kassaly to find the net.
In a game Mali dominated Keita, who now plays his club football in China, hit the crossbar seven minutes before his goal as the team who finished third in last year's competition ground out a valuable victory.

Earlier on Sunday DR Congo dragged themselves back from 2-0 against Ghana to secure a 2-2 draw.
Ghana, who reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup, also held in South Africa, eased into a two-goal lead despite being on the back foot for most of the opening exchanges.
Emmanuel Agyemang Badu grabbed the first on 39 minutes, converting from a Mubarak Wakaso attempt on goal.
And four minutes after halftime defender Jerry Akaminko nodded home to double the Black Stars' lead.
But Congo took just four minutes to respond, Tresor Mputu finishing superbly from Dieudonne Mbokani's cross.
A quarter of an hour later Mbokani slotted home from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the area by Jerry Akaminko to secure a deserved draw for Congo.
Congo's head coach Claude Le Roy told the tournament's official website: "I'm proud of my players. I told them before the game that they have huge quality. It is a fantastic experience and they deserve the result."
His opposite number, Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, said Congo were good value for their point: "I knew it was not going to be an easy game.
"Usually, it is expected that you win your first game, but it was not the case here. They were a very good side.
"We have learnt a lot from this game in which we game up a two-goal lead. It was due to some tactical indiscipline in we hope to correct them before the next game."
Reigning champions Zambia begin the defense of their title against Ethiopia on January 21. The Copper Bullets beat tournament favorites Ivory Coast in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Libreville, Gabon last February.

The Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon on Sunday were wet and windy as expected. And as also might have been expected, the day’s four champions were all Ethiopians, though not, due to the conditions, in times as quick as organizers might have liked. As Race Results Weeklyreports, the women’s half-marathon winnerMamitu Daska observed, “At a point the rain was so bad we couldn’t see.”
The day’s best performance, which involved racing through standing water in some spots, came from 20-year-old Merima Mohammed, who left her compatriot Buzunesh Deba, the 2011 New York City Marathon runner-up, in her wake at 33 kilometers and won the women’s marathon in 2:23:37, with Deba 49 seconds behind. Mohammed (seen above on a drier day), hit halfway in 1:10:56, and managed her winning time even though, as she told reporters, “I had a problem with my leg. It was a very painful situation.”
Tera Moody was the first American, sixth in 2:39:11, and lamented, “That second half was really, really rough.” Kelly Calway of the U.S. took seventh in 2:41:53.
Bazu Worku led an Ethiopian sweep of the first six places in 2:10:17, afterward remarking, “The weather was not cooperating with us.”
Andrew Carlson, the top American man in seventh place, in 2:17:16, declared, “Clearly, it wasn’t the time I was looking for.” He added, “There’s so many excuses you could make on a day like today, but I don’t want to make them. The thing I will take away from it is that I got it done.” Americans Scott Wiectechaand Sergio Reyes were ninth and tenth in 2:18:53 and 2:19:27, respectively.
Feyisa Lelisa repeated as half-marathon champ, winning a two-way battle withDeriba Merga by six seconds in 1:01:54. A $50,000 bonus was available if Zersenay Tadese’s world record of 58:23 was broken, but Lelisa realized that the conditions made that time impossible and decided, “I just want to win.”Shadrack Biwott, a U.S. citizen since June, was fourth in 1:02:23, while Luke Puskedra finished fifth in 1:02:23 and Aaron Braun sixth in 1:02:32.
Daska, the marathon winner in Houston in 2011, won Sunday’s half-marathon by more than two minutes in 1:09:53. Kenya’s Caroline Kilel was second in 1:11:58. Lisa Uhl, a 2012 Olympic 10,000-meter runner, was the first American, sixth in 1:13:28, despite falling early in the race and having to stop to put a shoe back on.

This year’s Boston Marathon will likely be another East African-dominated race up front, given the strong women’s and men’s international fields that race organizers announced this morning.
Defending women’s champion Sharon Cherop of Kenya will face a strong trio of Ethiopian women on April 15. The fastest of the bunch is Asalefech Mergia (seen above), who set her 2:19:31 PR while winning last year’s Dubai Marathon in a course record. She’ll be joined by 2012 world half-marathon champion, Meseret Debele, who won last October’s Amsterdam in a PR and course record of 2:21:09 two weeks after her world half-marathon win, and Mamitu Daska, a former Houston Marathon winner with a 2:21:59 best. Daska enters her Boston training cycle fit, as she won last Sunday’s Houston Half Marathon by more than two minutes.
Cherop’s strongest Kenyan compatriot should be Rita Jeptoo. She won Boston in 2006 and then overcame several sub-par years by placing second at Chicago last year in a personal best of 2:22:04.
The women’s field also includes Tetiana Gamera-Shmyrko of Ukraine, who was fifth in last August’s Olympic Marathon; Alemita Begna of Ethiopia, the course record holder at the Houston Marathon; and Madai Perez, whose 2:22:59 PR is the Mexican record.
The top American women in the field are 2012 Olympic marathoners Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher. Last week Serena Burla, who has a 2:28:27 PR, and Stephanie Rothstein-Bruce, who has a 2:29:35 PR, were added to the field.
Men’s defending champion Wesley Korir might need another hot day like last year to overcome runners with faster PRs. Although he improved his personal best to 2:06:13 at Chicago last fall, the Kenyan has only the ninth fastest PR in the field.
Moses Mosop’s 2:03:06 best is the fastest in the field. He ran that (tailwind-assisted) time to place second at Boston in 2011 in his debut at the distance. Mosop, who has world records for 25,000 meters and 30,000 meters on the track, was scheduled to run last fall’s New York City Marathon. When that race was canceled, he opted to return to training rather than find a replacement race. Along with Korir and Mosop, the marathon’s strong Kenyan contingent includesLevy Matebo, second at Boston last year and owner of a 2:05:16 PR, andDickson Chumba, an up-and-comer who set his 2:05:46 PR last fall.
Markos Geneti is the strongest Ethiopian in the men’s field. He won Los Angeles in 2011 in his marathon debut, and last year set his personal best of 2:04:54. Gebre Gebremariam, winner of the 2010 New York City Marathon, was third at Boston in 2011, but hasn’t been as impressive in his more recent marathons.
Two intriguing marathon debutants at Boston will be Micah Kogo and Lucas Rotich, both of Kenya. Kogo is a former world record holder for 10-K on the roads, and won the bronze medal at 10,000 meters in the 2008 Olympics. He set his half-marathon best of 59:07 last year. Rotich also has a sub-60:00 half-marathon PR (59:44) and great track credentials, including a 26:43 10,000-meter best.
Last week race organizers announced a strong American men’s contingent. Led by the three men who made the 2012 Olympic Marathon team—Meb Keflezighi, Ryan Hall, and Abdi Abdirahman—it also includes Jason Hartmann, fourth at Boston last year, and national 25-K record holderFernando Cabada.
Marathon runner Shumye dies in car crash
The IAAF is saddened by the news that Ethiopian marathon runner Alemayehu Shumye died in a car crash on Friday (11). He was 24.
His marathon career began in 2008 with much promise and in his first three races at the distance he won in Vercelli, Warsaw and Beirut.
His lifetime best, 2:08:46, was set at the 2009 Frankfurt Marathon where he finished fifth. His most recent Marathon victory came at last year’s Gold Coast Marathon.
Shumye competed just six days before the car crash, finishing 10th in Xiamen with a time of 2:12:57.
